Dear Othermother is a tender, yet playful, short documentary commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and BFI Doc Society. It explores friendship and motherhood in Liverpool 8, where over one in six families are headed by a single parent.  Through letter writing, conversations and retrospective walks, director Amber Akaunu delves into her childhood, as the daughter of a single mother, contextualising this with experiences of single mothers today. These intergenerational stories are connected by the community found in corner shops, places of worship, neighbours, community centres, family and friends.

The British Library commissioned Amber Akaunu, a Liverpool-born Nigerian-German filmmaker and artist, to engage creatively with the Gilroy archive. Inspired deeply by the archive, Amber has produced a zine and an accompanying film, both titled 'The Blueprint', that explores the idea that Black women, and their archives, are the blueprint, which Black women in the present, and future, will build on.

Homerton 2 Homerton is a 20 minute short documentary that follows the unfolding of a generational cycle between a mother that moved to Homerton, Hackney from Nigeria at the age of 8 and her son’s move to Homerton College, Cambridge decades later.

The 5 elements is a short film directed by Amber Akaunu and ElJosef, that explores a pre-colonial time, when our ancestors lived in harmony with the elements. The 8 minute film reflects and explores the connection that descendants of Africa will always have to Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Energetically, this translates to action, emotionality, grounding and intuitiveness. The film is is narrated by El’s words and was filmed by Akaunu in various locations across North West England and Wales in August 2020.

Definition: Aguda is the name given to the descendents of freed Afro-Brazilian slaves who left Brazil and settled in/returned to Nigeria. Regions with significant Aguda populations include Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Calabar and Port Harcourt. The Agudas in Lagos built and designed the Brazilian Quarters which still stands today (although it risks being demolished and is not in good condition). The buildings resemble the baroque style that was popular in Brazil in the 19th century. This film was commissioned by 20 Stories High and is part of a collective of work commissioned from Black local creatives under the name "Black with a Capital B".
